Bandhani Tie-Dye

Bandhani is one of India's oldest resist-dyeing traditions, practised largely by the Khatri community and documented in textile fragments and paintings for centuries. It remains central to festive and bridal wear across Gujarat and Rajasthan, with regional variations distinguishing the Kutch and Sikar-Jaipur styles.

Fabric is pinched and tied into thousands of tiny knots by hand before being dipped in dye; when the knots are untied, the resisted points reveal intricate dot patterns that build into larger motifs across the cloth.
